For those of us without the patience to learn LOLspeak well enought to type it, we can still get a good laugh from reading it and enjoy it from a spectator's standpoint. Leetspeak, which I will not give credit to using numerics, requires training to read so that it is only fun for the self glorified "noobs" who use it. GOOD JOB GUYS! Who'd'a guessed?!? :D Hey, don't hate on me - I'm not dissing anybody: I love Homestar, I wear a bracelet that says "WWSbD?" ("What Would Strongbad Do?"). I love icanhascheezburger, both the pics and the captions. It's brilliant! It's extremely creative, & I believe that that is exactly how cats think, & how they would write, if they wanted us to know what they were thinking. And probably how they'd spell - cats are notoriously bad spellers. I did notice that whenever anyone here wants to be understood and taken seriously they use real, intelligible English. Mai dikshunerry wil b so rleeved!! ;) All I wondered was why apparently bright people would write badly, just cause it's cool when cats do it. If it's cause it's fun, that's cool - it's your thing, do what you wanna do. techphets	51. RE: Can somebody explain this to me?? Aug 27 2008, 1:07 PM EDT I wrote the essay of an answer back on page two (in "normal" English). Partially because I don't write LOLspeak well, partially because I can not ask someone to read that much LOLspeak (especially if that person posted a question which seems to be saying "I like leet more that LOL.") Personally, I find LOL cute in short, concise doses. The captions are a perfect example. In threads, I prefer the responses that are two short sentences or less. Some people type much more than that- I usually don't read their replies. My opinion doesn't really matter though, the threads are for the captioners for the most part. To me, reading the picture threads is like taking a look under the hood of a muscle car. It's no Ferrari. Some of it doesn't make much sense. Some of it is just perfect. Some is old. Some is new. From what I can see, most of the people here are a warm and friendly bunch and if there are those who want to come in here just to cause trouble might it not be better to jsut get rid of them? Something like that. Her post from 8/26/08 is of a very different tone. She even used some LOL herself at the end. I think this discussion valuable because of that. Maybe there's not much value in continuing it, however. Clearly many LOLspeakers have become defensive and aren't acting as warm and friendly as they otherwise would have. Change is inevitable. Either keep up with the newer generations or "don't get it," I suppose. LOLspeak adds character to these photographs. The animals in the photographs are very child-like. The non-traditional writing helps add a very child-like (read: FUN) element to the site. Make no mistake, however- there is a notable amount of wit behind the captions as well. Some people won’t get that either. Leetspeak (I will not dignify it with the numbers I use for math) had its day. Hackers used it to make messages cryptic. Now, just as kids use forums and chat lines for dating (tell that to a hacker a decade or two back), kids use Leetspeak as well. Some think it's cool. That's fine, kids have cliques. Clothes, music, speak. They’ll all call the other groups “losers” at one point or another as well. Silly kids. As for creativity is concerned, I see no difference in English itself, Leetspeak, and LOLspeak. Languages follow certain rules. Boundaries are occasionally crossed. The creativity and thinking in writing is more in what you choose to write than what “speak,” language, or slang that you use to write it in. Can anyone imagine Leetspeak being used in these photographs instead of LOLspeak? The captions are meant to be humorous. Leetspeak is meant to be cryptic. Sure, the captions could all be in normal English but where's the fun in that? What's new in that? As many others have said: If you don't like the theme, don't visit. Go ahead and call me and everyone else here a "lamer" all day if you'd like. You may not be spelling like a second grader but you sure are acting like one.
